Ten Tips for Creators to Make Writing More Fun

How to actually enjoy writing emails

If you’re not a fan of writing in general, email writing can seem like absolute torture!

There are many reasons to consider doing email marketing as a creator—it’s ultimately the best way to truly own your audience. Social platforms are subject to algorithms and shadowbans, while email addresses are (nearly) forever.

Email marketing gives you greater insight and access to your fans. You can reach out to them however and whenever you’d like and get granular insight on who they are and how they interact with you on a 1:1 basis.

Okay, sure, email marketing is important and useful… but that doesn’t make it any more fun! Here, we’ll cover things you can do to make writing less awful and actually enjoyable. Follow these ten tips to feel more confident writing, which you can then apply to writing emails that your fans will love—pain free.

Tip #1: Get a writing buddy

Get yourself a writing buddy! Know a friend, sibling, or another creator who is also working on writing? Make time to write with each other. Be accountability partners. Check in with each other. Encourage each other. Share tips. Share feedback for each other’s writing.

Tip #2: Journal daily

Get into the habit of writing regularly. Not everything you write has to be published. Journal each day just to get your thoughts and feelings down on paper. No one ever has to read your journal entries, but just getting into the habit of putting pen to paper will help you see that writing isn’t intimidating and will help you improve bit by bit every single day.

Tip #3: Read books and listen to podcasts

Brute force writing isn’t the only way to get better - you can also read and listen to content you admire. Make it goal to read just 10 pages each day before bed or right when you wake up. Instead of listening to music on your commute, check out a podcast. By reading and listening more to people, you’ll improve your own communication which translates to easier and better writing.

Tip #4: Don’t overthink

Don’t fall into the analysis paralysis trap! When people overthink what or how they will write, they end up paralyzed by fear and never get started. You can also edit (… a million times over) or choose to scrap a piece all together. Just start writing - don’t worry, the thoughts will come to you and even if they don’t, it’s hardly the end of the world!

Tip #5: Visit a fun place

You don’t have to write at home! Take yourself out to a cute coffee shop, a beautiful library, a scenic patio, or a lovely garden. If you write in a physical place where you feel happy and calm, you’ll more quickly develop positive associations with writing. You’ll even look forward to writing because it means you can visit these places you love.

Tip #6: Save inspiring emails

As you go through your own inbox each day, save any emails you like in an “inspiration” folder (similar to how you’d pin content on Pinterest). Then go back to this folder when you’re starting to write for ideas.

For instant inspiration, check out sites like reallygoodemails.com regularly for examples of highly-converting emails from marketing experts at top brands.

Tip #7: Reward yourself for writing

Give yourself a little reward each time you write - it could be watching a show you like or getting a pastry from the local bakery or even taking a nap. Writing is hard, and we should respect and reward our own efforts! Just like writing in beautiful places, by rewarding yourself for writing, you’ll begin to associate writing with positive rewards.

Tip #8: Write about what you love

Email marketing doesn’t have to be about just dry topics. Write about what you love! Focus on topics you’re genuinely passionate about. You’ll have much more to say, and the writing will come naturally to you.

Tip #9: Write about your experiences

Try new things and write about them! Attempt a trending challenge, go to a new restaurant, use a new tool, try a viral tip, make a new recipe, and experiment with a new form of content. Then write about it - it’s a lot easier to write from your lived experience than it is to write more theoretically or to hypothecate.

Tip #10: Look up funny prompts online

Still stuck with writer’s block? Search prompts online! Pick the ones you find intriguing or funny and start writing. Not everything you write needs to make it into your email, but these prompts can help get you unstuck.

Your checklist for getting un-stuck

Ready to start crafting your first email? Here’s what to do next:

  • Start small - don’t try to put together a whole sequence in one day, just aim to finish your hook sentence or a rough first draft
  • Make a plan - know what steps go into crafting your first email and block off time to execute
  • Write a little every day - start journaling just for yourself each day so you get into the habit of writing
  • Brainstorm non-written content - put together a list of non-written content you can integrate in your current and future emails
